Karin van de Wiel is an Amsterdam-based photographer and journalist.
“My work delves into the intricate relationship between spaces—neighbourhoods, cities, or cultivated landscapes—and the dynamics of power and identity. These spaces are not mere backdrops but are dynamic and relational, shaping and being shaped by the individuals and groups who inhabit them. I am particularly interested in the struggle for identity preservation amidst the constant flux of these inherently political landscapes, investigating how individuals find belonging within them. Navigating both tangible and intangible aspects, I draw upon personal experiences, historical insights, and socio-political perspectives to uncover untold narratives and explore the potential of subjectivity in reclaiming them.
Since 2017, I've documented the evolving landscape of Amsterdam Nieuw-West, where I reside and work, with a focus on urban changes and neighbourhood identity. This has led to various projects, including 'Rondje Sloterplas' and 'The Trees Will Remain,' with a new project underway as part of Amsterdam's 750th anniversary celebration. Through 'Photographic Explorations,' I collaborate with local residents to capture their perspectives, culminating in a solo exhibition in September 2024. As part of my work in Nieuw-West, I conduct photography and zine-making workshops, providing a platform for residents to share insights, fostering a supportive environment for constructive feedback, and empowering our community to shape its own narrative.
In my other research thread, I uncover untold stories and unseen images of the lesbian community, highlighting our historical significance and resilience. Using vernacular photos from the Lesbian Herstory Archives in New York City, I depict lesbians living their daily lives outdoors from 1940-1970s, reclaiming urban spaces as political arenas. In a society where being oneself is an act of resistance, I showcase the diverse ways in which lesbians assert their identity and defy societal norms. It is a call to action to redefine and reclaim spaces, fostering a way of belonging and empowerment.
